Despite AmiSystemRestore working very well on X5000, it has the problem of deleting previous restore points. I suspect it's because I'm using the NGFS file format for the OS boot partition, which could explain this. On SAM460ex, it was never the problem, because could use the SFS2 file format to boot into the OS. On the X5000, you have to use the NGFS, and it's not so compatible with formats like SFS2. Is it possible to make AmiSystemRestore more friendly with file formats like NGFS? Other than that, it works as supposed to. Only little drawback is that I have to delete older restore points manually.

You're absolutely right, Chris. Ticking "Iconify on Start-Up" solved the issue, so now it works. Thanks again.

I understand. I didn't add it to S:User_Startup. I followed the instructions by the Installer. I understand now that it should be in WBStartup anyway and let it show the icon instead of opening the window during startup. Do you have plans to improve AmiSystemRestore? Been a couple of years. It could need a good update, now that we are in 2017.

@HKvalhe
If you have "Iconify on start-up" ticked, and still have the problem of AmiSystemRestore opening it's window on start-up, then the only possible explanation is that it is being run TWICE. That would also explain why you think it doesn't need to be in the WbStartup (because it's already being started elsewhere, perhaps another entry in WbStartup, or maybe your S:User-Startup ?).

@HKvalhe "i have discovered that you don't really need AmiSystemRestore in WBStartup"

You are WRONG. AmiSystemRestore MUST be added to the WbStartup, otherwise it will be unable to record the changes made by programs (such as when installing them).

If you do not want AmiSystemRestore opening it's window on start-up, then simply click on it's Prefs button, tick "Iconify on start-up", and then click Save.

AmiSystemRestore works very well, even under latest AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 1.

However, i noticed that if you have it in WBStartup, the AmiSystemRestore GUI or icon shows up, which of course is normal, but can be annoying to start up that way.

So i have discovered that you don't really need AmiSystemRestore in WBStartup, as long as you have the program up and running in the Dock itself. Instead of showing it up under WBStartup, the program runs actively in the background anyway, and you can just click the AmiSystemRestore in the dock anytime you want, and the program still runs in the background. Therefore, no need to worry about the window or icon showing up during startup :) That is, to understand, that the main installation of AmiSystemRestore was successful, and simply just remove it from WBStartup. That's the only thing :)

@HKvalhe "*When deleting restore points, it should be possible to tick multiple restore points at once to delete, just like Restoring in Windows."

This is already possible, but you must change "Restore mode" to "Limited restore (and multiple selections are allowed)". I know this isn't entirely intuitive, but the only alternative would be that deletions must be done in a separate window (which always allows multiple selections).

Updated to R7 of AmiSystemRestore :) Works always a a charm! Would have been nice to have iconed AmiSystemRestore drawer and to have AmiUpdate update and autoinstall a new version when there is any :) Thanks again for the great update, Chris :) So happy to have donated for it!:)

I have a question about AmiSystemRestore: While it is excellent as it is, how about a small update? Here is what i would like to see:

*When deleting restore points, it should be possible to tick multiple restore points at once to delete, just like Restoring in Windows.

That's the only small update i want to see. Other than that, AmiSystemRestore is perfect as it is.

I don't understand why AmiUpdate (which ran and claimed no updates to 529 entries it looked at) doesn't provide me with this AmiSystemRestore update.

Is there probably a simple reason?

I request that any replies unrelated to AmiSystemRestore are made by email or on a forum. I don't think that the "ports problem" is nearly as bad as you make out (especially in the longer term), but I don't want to go off-topic here.

Actually I don't trust, or better I don't like installer at all as well. I prefer to install everything by hand, that's how I used to do anyway, so that I know exactly what I'm doing. ;-)

On the other hand I can see why you wrote that tool. Unfortunately our OS 4.1 is full with linux ports mostly (than native tools) - I found it a real shame - which means thousands of files copied into our hard disks. Of course such files can overwrite some mandatory files in SYS: directory no doubt. Take for example AmiCygnix; hundreds of files. Although a terrific port, but I don't used to install a vast amount of files in my Amiga ever. There are hundereds of such examples (all coming from ports).

Where are those native Amiga games or programs we used to have? Everyone selects the easy path of porting, so yes, AmigaOS sometime will be like Windoze or Linux (or Klinex) with hunderds of thousands of files, where you'll not have the slightest idea what is what. :(

I always prefer to install and run a native AmigaOS program from a descent developer, than trying to fiddle with a port because it was an easy one.

My reason for developing AmiSystemRestore is quite simple: I don't trust installer scripts at all, but I no-longer have the time or interest to manually back-up every relevant system file before running the installer (or installing it manually).

Seems a promising tool, but I would never understand its existence. We're not running crap OS like Windoze, which there it seems mandatory, but AmigaOS. In AmigaOS you're not dealing with millions of system files that's for sure.

@Unimon
The bug (not really a crash) has been fixed for the next beta release of AmiSystemRestore :)

I do NOT advise reporting bugs HERE, because there is little chance I will ever see them. Please email me (or PM on AmigaWorld.net).

I will try to investigate GlobalTrash install issue, but it would have been much better if I could have asked you questions (e.g. what machine, what version of OS4, what did you Crash Log show, etc).

Unfortunately, it causes GlobalTrash installation crash. Becareful while installing any program. If you see it works better so, otherwise close it or delete/deactivate it in WBStartup prefs. Thanks, it could be a very useful tool. I hope other Amiga user will post or contact you to give you feedback.
